==Introduction== OpenID is a decentralized identity system, and simply provides a way of proving that someone owns a URL. The URL is the user's identity. An OpenID consumer will need to confirm the identity of users by talking to an OpenID server. The PHP OpenID library does the heavy-lifting of this interaction, leaving you to spend more time on your application. It is highly recommended that you have a look at the OpenID homepage and specification. http://www.openid.net The PHP OpenID library has been ported directly from the high-quality Python OpenID library. See http://openid.schtuff.com. For the most part, both the PHP and Python versions share a common API, making it simpler to port a server or client from one language to the other. It is my goal to incorporate new fixes and features from the Python library over time and to keep the libraries in sync. Currently, all of the examples are direct ports from the Python package as well. Also, the version number matches that of the Python package, and should reflect them in the future, though possibly with an additional minor number. Be aware that as of this writing, the PHP port has not been heavily tested or used in any production environment. The PHP OpenID consumer has been verified to work with both the Python OpenID server and the PHP server. Also, the PHP server has been verified to work with the Python consumer. More testing with other servers needs to be done, and there are bound to be bugs and gotchas. A compliance test suite would be a really nice tool for ensuring interoperability. ==What does PHP OpenID do?== The PHP OpenID library fully implements the OpenID specification. The library takes care of all consumer to server interaction logic and identity verification intricacies. In a nutshell, the library provides building blocks upon which you can base your own OpenID server or consumer. It does NOT make assumptions about your page processing or attempt to dispatch incoming requests. Nor does it display any HTML pages or forms to the user. That is all left to you, although some examples are provided. ==PHP Compatibility== PHP OpenID is intended to run on any version of PHP >= 4.1.0, although to date it has only been tested with PHP5. If you encounter problems running with other versions, please let me know. Great care has been taken to use PHP extensions when available and to provide fallback routines in case the extension is not present. These fallback routines are often slower and may not be as secure or "rock-solid". For production use of the library, I recommend installation of these extensions: gmp, mhash, curl, and tidy2. PHP OpenID does not use or require PEAR. ==Installation== 1) Extract files. tar -xzvf PHP-OpenID-<version>.tar.gz 2) Move all files somewhere beneath your webserver docroot. That's it! You should now be able to load the simple.php example in your browser. You may also wish to install additional PHP extensions for performance or compatibility reasons. See the "PHP Compatibility" section. ==Contact / Reporting Bugs== Please send an email to php-openid@videntity.org. ==Final Words== OpenID is an idea whose time has come. No one likes filling out yet another registration form on the web just so you can post a comment on a blog or forum. OpenID has the power to simplify our lives just a little bit. Although it may seem a bit daunting at first, it is worth taking some time to integrate into your website. If you do choose to use openid on your site, you may also wish to link to Videntity.org. Videntity.org is a site with the simple aim to explain the OpenID concept to users, and to provide them with a unique identity page that is easily machine-readable via vcard, rss, xprofile, and other web technologies. Each user will receive a simple, unique identity such as "sally.videntity.org". By linking to videntity.org on your login or registration forms, you can avoid the hassle of educating users about OpenID yourself. Further, your site can act as an OpenID consumer only, without needing to implement an OpenID server component. As of this writing, the Videntity.org website is in testing and should be operational within 1 week. Please visit the site for more details.
